Gran Museo de la Costa Occidental

Stepping back in time, imagine the Yucatán Peninsula during the Pleistocene era. Fast forward to today, and we stand before the Gran Museo de la Costa Occidental. This museum, inaugurated in September 2024, is a testament to the rich history of the Mexican Caribbean. Located within Tulum’s Parque del Jaguar, the Gran Museo de la Costa Occidental is the largest museum in the Tren Maya system. It boasts over 1,200 square meters of exhibition space. Within these walls, stories unfold, from the late Pleistocene to the present day. The museum’s collection includes over 300 original artifacts and 50 reproductions. One highlight is a tetrapod plate depicting a lobster from the Late Classic period (600-900 AD). Another is a stela with calendar inscriptions and bas-relief text from the Early Classic period (200-600 AD). This stela comes from the Museo del Pueblo Maya in Dzibilchaltún, Yucatán. The museum also holds a replica of the hieroglyphic stairway from the El Resbalón archaeological site. This site, located near San Román in southern Quintana Roo, is associated with the transition from life to death. Even facsimiles of the Mayan codices of Mexico and Dresden are on display.
