Grace Ethiopian Church didn’t spring up overnight. It’s a story of resilience and faith. The origins lie with early Ethiopian exiles. They left their homeland seeking religious political and social freedoms. Missing their traditions they began meeting in rented halls. For over two decades they worshipped in borrowed spaces. As their numbers swelled they moved from one rented hall to another at least five times in twenty-five years.
Their hope of returning to Ethiopia dimmed. They decided to establish a permanent home. Led by Abba Petros a group of about 50 worshipers incorporated their assembly. Initially known as Mahbere Memenane zahti Amanuel Church the name was later changed to Debre Genet Medhane Alem Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church. This new name was a reflection of their deep-rooted faith and the community they had built.
The congregation worked tirelessly. They raised money to buy land to build their first church. This involved navigating the necessary permits. It was a long process almost two years. Finally the ground breaking took place in September 2002. The church was inaugurated on November 9 2003 a testament to their unwavering devotion.
