How do you transform a space of worship into a sanctuary for remembrance? That is the story of Grabeskirche St. Bartholomäus. It stands as a unique testament to Cologne’s evolving spiritual landscape.

Originally built in the 1950s, Grabeskirche St. Bartholomäus served as a Roman Catholic parish church. Its architect, Hans Schwippert, embraced functionalism. He designed a simple rectangular brick building. A free-standing church tower completed the ensemble. The interior showcased exposed concrete.

After the Second World War, many churches in Cologne lay in ruins. There was an urgent need for new places of worship. The Ehrenfeld community actively helped to build St. Bartholomäus. As the new millennium dawned, church attendance dwindled. Financial constraints mounted. The parish made a difficult decision. They decided to repurpose St. Bartholomäus. In 2006, the vision for a funeral church and columbarium was born.

The transformation took time. An architectural competition was held in 2011. Kissler + Effgen, an architectural firm from Wiesbaden, won. They renovated the roof and facade. Construction began in 2013. By 2014, Grabeskirche St. Bartholomäus opened as a final resting place.

The interior of Grabeskirche St. Bartholomäus was redesigned. The areas beneath the two galleries were separated. A reception room and administration office were created. The former baptistery became a small altar room. The nave transformed into a columbarium.

A light curtain hangs from the ceiling. It divides the space. This creates a central area for community. Niches along the walls house urns. Each niche offers a space for reflection and remembrance. Bronze nameplates mark the urns. They provide space for flowers.
