Have you ever wondered what lies beyond the grand monuments and bustling streets of Vienna? Right here, behind the Währinger Straße, you find a haven of history and tranquility. Welcome to the Gräberhain Schubertpark, a hidden gem amidst the city’s urban landscape. This tranquil plot of land was once part of the Währinger Ortsfriedhof, a cemetery that served Vienna’s residents for over a century. It was a place of final rest for the wealthy and the common folk alike. But as the city grew, the Währinger Ortsfriedhof reached its capacity. In 1873, it was closed and deemed no longer usable for burials. For years, the cemetery lay dormant, awaiting its new purpose. Today, the Gräberhain Schubertpark stands as a testament to the past. The original tombstones remain, weathered by time but still bearing the stories of those who lie beneath. The park was designed to retain the beauty of the historic cemetery, integrating the original tombstones into the landscape. Here, we find the resting place of some of Vienna’s most famous, including Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert. Their graves, however, didn’t remain in this beautiful park for long. To prevent the graves of these beloved musicians from falling prey to the elements, they were relocated to Vienna’s Central Cemetery. Their tombstones, though, were left behind, serving as reminders of the park’s rich history. Take a stroll through the Gräberhain Schubertpark, and you’ll encounter an array of impressive tombstones, each a work of art in its own right. Each tombstone whispers a story of love, loss, and the enduring spirit of those who came before us. The Gräberhain Schubertpark is a place where you can reflect on the circle of life and the passing of time, a place where Vienna’s past meets its present, a place where the whispers of the dead can still be heard.
