Known also as the tree of heaven, the Götterbaum before you isn’t quite as heavenly as its name suggests. It’s a story of rapid growth, resilience, and a bit of controversy all rolled into one.
The Götterbaum, scientifically known as Ailanthus altissima, is originally from northeast and central China. Around 1740, it made its way to Europe, specifically to Paris and quickly spread as an ornamental tree. Its rapid spread earned it a place on the list of invasive species of union-wide importance. This tree is very adaptable. It can handle air pollution and various soil conditions. This resilience made it popular in cities. People also used it for erosion control and as a shade provider.
In northern Italy and France, Götterbaum plantations once supported silk production. The Ailanthus silkmoth, imported from China, thrived on its leaves. In China, its dense wood has traditional uses. It is used in traditional Chinese medicine. It serves as firewood and in charcoal production. Its components find use in the chemical industry.
However, the Götterbaum’s success comes with a downside. It has a high potential for invasion. Growing up to 30 meters tall, it spreads quickly through root sprouts. These sprouts allow it to rapidly colonize disturbed areas. Its tolerance to drought gives it an edge over native trees.

It spreads through root contact, affecting nearby trees. Another method involves girdling the tree. This weakens it over two years until it dies and can be felled.
One crucial step is preventing its spread. Removing young plants by digging or pulling them up is effective. We must question its use as an ornamental tree. Gardens and roadsides often become sources of further spread. Soil contaminated with its roots or seeds should not be reused without heat treatment. The seeds are spread over long distances.
