Ever since its inception in 1929 Görvälns vattenverk has been a vital part of Stockholm’s infrastructure. This remarkable waterworks nestled on Skäftingeholmen island provides clean drinking water to almost half a million people. It’s a testament to human ingenuity and collaboration.

Görvälns vattenverk wasn’t built overnight. Its creation in 1929 was a direct response to a critical shortage of groundwater. Three northern Stockholm municipalities joined forces forming Norrvatten. This collaboration ensured reliable water supply for a growing population. Today 14 municipalities rely on Görvälns vattenverk.

Initially the water purification was quite basic involving just rapid filtration and chlorination. As demands increased so did the plant. The process became more sophisticated to meet higher standards. Raw water is drawn from Görvälnfjärden. It’s extracted from two different depths 22 meters and 4 meters. The purified water then travels through an extensive 260 kilometer pipeline network. This vast system primarily consists of steel and concrete pipes reaching up to 12 meters in diameter.

Görvälns vattenverk is a marvel of modern engineering. The water produced is of exceptionally high quality. It even surpasses the purity of many bottled water brands. In 2008 alone the plant delivered a staggering 434 million cubic meters of drinking water. That’s enough to quench the thirst of a city.

But the story of Görvälns vattenverk isn’t finished. As Stockholm continues to grow so does the demand for water. Norrvatten anticipates serving over 12 million residents by 2050. That’s double the current population served. Plans are already underway for major expansion. This will ensure a continued flow of clean water for generations to come. This quiet giant on Skäftingeholmen ensures Stockholm’s future. It provides the most important element for life. Clean drinking water.
