Was it pride or dread that coursed through the veins of the crew as they stood aboard the Gorch Fock I on that fateful May Day in 1945? The air was thick with the acrid smell of smoke and the rumble of approaching Soviet tanks. The Gorch Fock I, christened in honor of the German writer Johann Kinau, had once been a symbol of hope and maritime prowess. Built in a mere 100 days, the majestic three-masted barque had served as a training vessel for the German Reichsmarine. Now, she was trapped in the crosshairs of history.

The crew, determined to spare their beloved vessel from falling into enemy hands, took drastic measures. They scuttled the Gorch Fock I in the shallow waters off Rügen Island, watching as the waves slowly swallowed her elegant silhouette. The ship lay submerged for two years, a silent testament to the tumultuous end of World War II.

But the Gorch Fock I was not destined to remain a forgotten relic. Raised from the depths by the Soviets in 1947, she was reborn as the Tovarishch, or “Comrade.” Repaired, renamed, and with a new home port in Odessa, she embarked on a different kind of journey. For over four decades, she sailed under the Soviet, and later Ukrainian, flags. She participated in numerous Tall Ships’ Races, circumnavigated the globe, and even clinched victory in the Operation Sail race twice.

However, time and tight budgets eventually took their toll. By the 1990s, the Gorch Fock I, still known as Tovarishch, was in dire need of repairs. After a prolonged stay in British ports seeking funding, she was finally purchased by sponsors and returned to her original home port of Stralsund. On November 29, 2003, she was ceremoniously rechristened as the Gorch Fock I, marking the beginning of her third life. Today, the Gorch Fock I stands as a museum ship, a testament to her remarkable journey through history’s turbulent waters. She serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience of the human spirit, the enduring allure of the sea, and the captivating tales that ships whisper to those who listen closely.
