Good Hope School

Have you ever heard of a school named “Good Hope”? Right here, at the junction of Ngau Chi Wan Street and Clear Water Bay Road, stands Good Hope School. It’s nestled on a hill in the eastern part of Ngau Chi Wan, overlooking the bustling city below. Good Hope School isn’t just one building. It actually occupies several locations. The Kindergarten is at 381 Jat’s Incline, the Primary School at 383 Jat’s Incline, and the Secondary School at 303 Clear Water Bay Road. Founded in 1954, Good Hope School began as a humble kindergarten on Waterloo Road. It was established by the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (MIC). The school quickly grew. In 1955, the primary school opened at its current location. The secondary school followed soon after, welcoming its first students in 1957. These pioneering students took the HKCE Examination in 1962. Good Hope School continued to expand. A new wing was added in 1963 to accommodate the increasing number of students. By 1975, the secondary section reached its current size of 36 classes. In 1978, the Secondary Section became fully subsidized under the Hong Kong Education Department. Another milestone was the inauguration of Delia’s Wing in 1985. Good Hope School’s journey wasn’t without its changes. The kindergarten was closed at one point, but thankfully reopened in 2008. The primary section building was demolished in 2005 and then rebuilt in 2008, providing a modern learning environment for its students. Good Hope School stands as a testament to the dedication of the MIC sisters. Their motto, “Tu Es Spes,” meaning “You are my hope,” reflects their commitment to education and nurturing young minds.
