Whispers of history linger at Gömsta Ängs naturreservat. Picture this tranquil haven nestled in Huddinge. This small reserve boasts a rich history. It’s Huddinge’s oldest and smallest. It was established in 1966. Gömsta Äng’s story unfolds across centuries.

The meadow itself owes its existence to a bygone era. A croft once stood here. It belonged to Alby gård. Only foundation remains today. Farmers and their animals kept the land open. This maintained the unique biodiversity. The area has seen periods of regrowth and clearing. Recent years have seen traditional farming techniques return. Haymaking and grazing are restoring the meadow’s beauty. A riot of wildflowers is the goal.

Spring brings a breathtaking display. Gullvivor (primroses) carpet the slopes. Before them bluebells light the whole hillside. Later bluebells and violets appear. The sand violet holds a special place here. It has its only known habitat in Huddinge. A remarkable discovery in 1933 revealed ivy. This ancient plant is a relic from the Bronze Age. A warmer climate then favored it. Attempts to relocate the 1933 ivy have so far failed.

The surrounding forest is equally fascinating. Steep slopes and cliffs are home to deciduous trees. A damp riparian forest thrives. Here grow alder elm hazel and willow. A woodland area further enriches the flora. From the cliffs you can see Albysjön and Alby. The view is stunning.

Gömsta Äng was once more than a nature reserve. In the 1930s skeletal remains were found. Literature suggests 14 cholera victims were buried here. In the 1960s a ski slope existed. It was called Ullerstupet. A ski lift and a cafe were part of the scene. It was Flottsbrobacken’s predecessor. Today nothing remains of this lively past.

Gömsta Äng’s boundary was altered in 1998. Albysjön’s eastern shore then became part of Huddinge. This small reserve holds layers of stories. Each reveals the fascinating interplay between nature and human history. Explore Gömsta Ängs naturreservat. Discover its beauty and its secrets. It’s a journey through time.
