Engraved in stone, a name whispers across time. Hannibal. Here at Goldvein Baptist Church, his legacy endures. This church, nestled in Goldvein, Virginia, has a history as solid as the stones that form its walls. The congregation first gathered in 1799, worshipping in a nearby grove, which gave the church its name. The current fieldstone sanctuary, with its simple vestibule, was built in 1833 on land donated by Thomas Skinker. Now, look closely at the doorway lintels, massive stones that have witnessed generations of worshippers. Over the east door, etched into the stone, is the name “Hannibal 1833”. Hannibal was an enslaved master mason, owned by the Skinker family. He was in charge of a team of skilled enslaved artisans. His mark can also be found on another building in Southern Fauquier County, Chestnut Lawn. Built in 1832, this imposing Federal-style house bears Hannibal’s signature, “Han 1832,” carved into a stone between upper-story windows. Here at Goldvein Baptist Church, Hannibal’s skill is evident in the sturdy construction. Thirty years after its construction, the church served as a Confederate hospital and later as a Union stable during the Civil War. The stones Hannibal laid have endured through conflict and peace, a testament to his craftsmanship. The story of Goldvein Baptist Church is intertwined with the often-unheard stories of those who built it. Hannibal’s name, etched in stone, reminds us to remember these lives and their contributions to our history.
