Did Goethe ever imagine, while planting his roses at Goethes Gartenhaus, that his humble garden would become a literary landmark? Goethes Gartenhaus in Weimar is more than just a charming cottage. It’s a portal to the past, a place where the seeds of literary genius were sown. This former vineyard house, nestled in the Park an der Ilm, was Goethe’s first Weimar home, gifted to him by Duke Carl August in 1776. He arrived in Weimar in 1775. Just a year later, this small haven became his sanctuary, a space where nature’s tranquility fueled his creativity. He even wrote to Countess Auguste zu Stolberg, describing his “charming little garden at the gate on the Ilm.” He lovingly restored the dilapidated cottage, pouring his heart into its renovation and the garden’s revival. Imagine Goethe, young and vibrant, transforming this neglected space into a blossoming retreat. He planted roses and grapevines, training them to climb the trellised walls of the Gartenhaus. He even co-designed a unique monument with his teacher, Adam Friedrich Oeser, known as the “Stone of Good Luck.” Within these walls, surrounded by his carefully cultivated garden, Goethe penned masterpieces like “Erlkönig” and the poem “To the Moon.” He began working on “Iphigenie auf Tauris” here, and also worked on dramas like “Egmont” and “Turquato Tasso.” The Gartenhaus became the birthplace of some of his most iconic works. The ground floor housed a dining room and a kitchen, where original features like the oak tables and two maps of Rome still evoke Goethe’s presence. These maps, reminders of his Italian journey, inspired the second volume of his “Italian Journey.” Though he eventually moved to a larger residence on Frauenplan in 1782, Goethes Gartenhaus remained his cherished retreat. He frequently returned to nurture his garden and find solace within its walls. After Goethe’s death, his grandsons opened the Gartenhaus to the public in 1841, transforming it into a place of pilgrimage for literature enthusiasts. Today, Goethes Gartenhaus stands as a museum, meticulously preserved to reflect its appearance during Goethe’s time. Original furnishings, including his high desk and folding bed, evoke his presence. The artwork and manuscripts, drawn from his estate, offer glimpses into his life and creative process. A visit to Goethes Gartenhaus isn’t just a museum tour. It’s a journey into the heart of literary history, a chance to walk in the footsteps of a genius and experience the place where his words first took flight.
