Goddard pioneered modular spacecraft design. This innovation reduced costs and enabled in-orbit satellite repairs. The Solar Max satellite was repaired by astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1984. The Hubble Space Telescope launched in 1990 is still in service. Its modular design allows for multiple servicing missions.
Today Goddard is involved in all of NASA’s key programs. The center has developed instruments for planetary exploration. These instruments have been sent to every planet in our Solar System. Goddard’s Earth Science Enterprise includes spacecraft in the Earth Observing System fleet. They also manage EOSDIS a science data collection and distribution system.
The Goddard Visitor Center offers a glimpse into this world of space exploration. It is open to the public from Tuesdays through Sundays free of charge. Displays feature spacecraft and technologies developed at Goddard. Models of the Hubble Space Telescope and deep space imagery are on display. The center also has a Science On a Sphere projection system.
Goddard’s contributions extend beyond scientific discovery. The center has also produced significant spinoff technologies. Weather balloon technology has aided firefighters. Aluminized Mylar from satellites has improved sports equipment. Laser optics systems have transformed the camera industry. Life detection missions help scientists find bacteria in contaminated food.
Queen Elizabeth II visited Goddard Space Flight Center on May 8 2007. She spoke with the crew aboard the International Space Station. This highlighted the center’s importance in international space collaboration.
