The original structure wasn’t Glymont Flint Church as we know it. It was Pye’s Chapel a humble building erected in 1800. It was a simple framed structure a blend of masonry and stucco. This small chapel served the Catholic community of Glymont. A community that existed long before the chapel’s construction. Their faith flourished even amidst hardship. They practiced their religion in the homes of the wealthy or in whatever space was available. These were clandestine gatherings a testament to their unwavering faith.
The land itself holds a rich history. The Pye family owned it thanks to a 1654 land grant. They owned 5000 acres. This included the land where the church stands today. Sarah and Charles Pye and other family members lie buried nearby. Their presence serves as a constant reminder of the generations that have walked this sacred ground.
Pye’s Chapel eventually fell into disrepair. It was replaced in 1913 by a larger church. That church served the community until the 1960s. The land was then expanded to include the existing cemetery. The church wasn’t always a solely Glymont affair. At various points it was under the care of priests who also oversaw other areas.
