Globala gymnasiet is located centrally. You can find it at Zinkensdamm in Södermalm. Around 700 students and 60 teachers are here. The gymnasiet has its own garden. It also has a sports hall. A library offers quiet study spots and cozy reading corners. An active student body and many clubs enrich student life.
Globala gymnasiet started in 2003. Lars Benon was one of the founders. He was also the school’s first rektor. The school initially offered a unique social science program.
The school first resided on Stigbergsgatan. Later, it moved to Klarabergsviadukten. In 2006, the Utbildningsnämnden decided to renovate Zinkensdammsskolan. This would better suit Globala gymnasiet’s needs. The construction finished in January 2008.
The school expanded its programs in 2007–2008. It welcomed 176 students. These students enrolled in SP Global, SP Bild, and NV Hälsa och miljö.
In 2009, Globala Gymnasiet became one of ten schools in Sweden. It gained permission to create elite classes. These classes had a theoretical focus. This experiment lasted until 2014.
Globala gymnasiet offers several programs. They include Estetiska programmet. Others are Ekonomiprogrammet, Naturvetenskapsprogrammet and Samhällsvetenskapsprogrammet. The school also provides Språkintroduktion.
Globala gymnasiet has received awards for its sustainability work. It was a Kunskapspriset finalist multiple times. Uniquely, it is the only school in Stockholm with a fully vegetarian lunch menu. Some teachers also conduct research alongside their teaching.
Globala gymnasiet allows students to take university courses. The student body is independent. It practices student democracy.
The school has a student newspaper named Globalt Perspektiv. It has been published regularly since 2014.
Katrin Bienzle Arruda, a teacher, won an award in 2022. Kungliga Vitterhetsakademien recognized her excellent teaching. Also in 2022, rektor Jenny Hyenstrand was named Årets gymnasierektor.
The building itself has a history. Architect Paul Hedqvist designed it in a functionalist style. It opened in 1936 as Stockholms stads södra kommunala mellanskola. The property includes a main building and two wings. A glazed staircase connects the eastern wing. The western wing houses a gym and dance studio.
Even the roof has a purpose. It features a radio beacon for NDB. Its call sign is “OU.” It transmits on 322 kHz.
Globala gymnasiet has had several names. It was once Högalids samrealskola. It also was Zinkensdammsskolan.
