Built in 1880 in the Victorian Italianate style by architect Ambrose Thornley it served as the heart of Glebe’s local government. For many years it was the seat of The Glebe Municipal Council. It hosted balls concerts and even political gatherings.
In 1948 Glebe’s municipality merged with Sydney. Glebe Town Hall then became a community centre. It continued to play a vital role in the community’s life. It was transferred to Leichhardt Council in 1968 before returning to City of Sydney’s control in 2003.
A fire in 1988 caused significant damage. This led to extensive repairs. The restoration uncovered hidden treasures. Ornate plaster carvings using the Italian Sgraffito technique were found. These carvings are now proudly displayed. They’re a rare example of this art form in Sydney.
A major restoration project took place between 2008 and 2013. This was overseen by Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects. The renovation cost $6.8 million. The project gave Glebe Town Hall new life. It’s now an accessible and sustainable community venue. The project also brought a rainwater storage system. This system supports a habitat garden for the endangered Blue Wren.
