What if a museum visit felt more like stepping into a world of pure imagination? That’s precisely the idea behind the Glazer Children’s Museum.

The Glazer Children’s Museum isn’t just a place to look at things. It is a place where kids can learn and grow. It is located in downtown Tampa. The Glazer Children’s Museum sits next to the Tampa Museum of Art. Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park is nearby too. The Glazer Children’s Museum is part of the Downtown River Arts neighborhood.

Let’s step back in time to understand the origins of this amazing place. The story began in 1965 with Safety Village in Lowry Park. Then in 1986, community volunteers founded the Children’s Museum of Tampa. It started small. It was a storefront location. The museum provided exhibits. These gave children a safe place to learn through play.

In 1989, the museum moved next to the city zoo. It was renamed Kid City. It featured miniature buildings that looked like a small town. Kid City taught children about the value of community. Over 750000 visitors enjoyed Kid City.

The museum needed to expand. So in 2003, plans began for a new state-of-the-art children’s museum. It would be located in downtown Tampa’s Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. Construction cost 22 million dollars. In 2010, the new museum opened. It was named Glazer Children’s Museum. The Glazer Family Foundation donated 5 million dollars. In its first year, the Glazer Children’s Museum welcomed 250000 guests. It also donated 25000 admission tickets to underserved youth. Around 26000 children visited on school field trips.

Today, the Glazer Children’s Museum has welcomed over two million guests. The Glazer Children’s Museum has also won many awards. These include Educational Outreach Awards and the Diversity and Inclusion Award. The Glazer Children’s Museum has a mission. It wants to create engaging play experiences for children and families. The Glazer Children’s Museum’s vision is a community that values play. They see it as the foundation for learning.

Did you know that the Glazer Children’s Museum even hosted a Triceratops fossil named Big John? In 2023, the museum put Big John on display for three years. It even changed its rules. Adults could visit without children.

As you explore the Glazer Children’s Museum, remember that you are in a place for learning and play. The Glazer Children’s Museum inspires future generations.
