How could Turin not honor Giuseppe Luigi Lagrange? This monument stands as a testament to one of the greatest mathematicians of the 18th century. Born right here in Turin on January 25 1736 Giuseppe Luigi Lagrange made an indelible mark on the world.

Lagrange’s story is one of exceptional talent. He began his academic journey studying law. However his passion quickly shifted to mathematics. He was largely self-taught devouring the works of mathematical giants like Euler.

At the young age of 19 Lagrange began teaching at a local institute. His brilliance shone brightly. He soon co-founded the Turin Academy of Sciences. It fostered collaboration and innovation in the scientific community.

Now consider Lagrange’s impact on mathematics. He made groundbreaking contributions to number theory. He also helped establish the field of calculus of variations. His most famous work is Mècanique Analytique published in 1788. It revolutionized mechanics and laid the foundation for rational and analytical mechanics.

Lagrange’s influence extended beyond mathematics. He also made significant contributions to celestial mechanics. He studied the moon’s libration. He also investigated the movements of Jupiter’s satellites. His rigorous mathematical approach helped solve complex astronomical problems.

The monument before you reflects Lagrange’s intellectual stature. Fundraising began in 1856 a testament to his enduring legacy. Sculptor Giovanni Albertoni began work on the statue in 1865. It was unveiled in 1867.

Notice the statue’s dimensions. The pedestal stands 3 meters tall. The sculpture itself is 2.5 meters. It is crafted from Carrara marble and pink Baveno granite. These materials are not cheap and reflect the high esteem Lagrange is held in. Lagrange is depicted in a thoughtful pose. In his right hand he holds a pencil. In his left hand he holds a sheet of paper. A pile of books lies at his feet symbolizing his vast knowledge.

During the French Revolution Lagrange showed great resilience. Despite the turmoil he continued his work. He became a member of the commission that established the metric system. His work paved the way for the modern international system of units.

Even in France Turin never forgot him. A street Via Giuseppe Luigi Lagrange and a square Piazza Giuseppe Luigi Lagrange bear his name. The Mathematics Department of the Politecnico di Torino is named in his honor. This is a fitting tribute to a man who brought so much honor to his birthplace.

Lagrange’s life ended in Paris on April 10 1813. He was buried in the Panthéon among France’s greatest luminaries. Yet his story began here in Turin. His legacy continues to inspire mathematicians and scientists around the world. As you stand before this monument remember Giuseppe Luigi Lagrange. He was a true giant of science. He embodies the spirit of Turin’s intellectual heritage.
