Born with a deformed spine Giuseppe Cafasso’s life was far from ordinary. This unassuming priest became a towering figure of faith and compassion in Turin. His story unfolds before you a testament to a life dedicated to the marginalized.

This monument a tribute to St Joseph Cafasso stands as a silent witness to his extraordinary work. It was here in Turin that he devoted himself to the city’s most vulnerable. Cafasso a man of humble origins rose to become a professor of moral theology. He served as the Superior of the ecclesiastical college from 1846 to 1860. He even became the pastor of Saint Francis Church in 1848.

But it was his work with prisoners that truly defined him. Cafasso wasn’t just a spiritual advisor. He was an advocate for prison reform working tirelessly to improve the horrific conditions. He ministered to condemned men often escorting them to their execution. He became known as the “Priest of the Gallows” a title born from his unwavering dedication to providing spiritual comfort to those facing death. He even famously referred to those who found faith before their deaths as “hanged saints”.

His friendship with St John Bosco is another notable chapter. Cafasso met the young Bosco when Bosco was only twelve. He became a mentor guiding him toward his vocation of serving Turin’s impoverished youth. Interestingly enough despite his frail physique and curved spine Cafasso’s strength of character was evident throughout his ministry. He once reportedly held onto the beard of a large and intimidating prisoner until the man finally confessed.

His legacy extends beyond his actions. He founded religious fellowships and promoted devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. Cafasso’s life was a powerful testament to faith perseverance and unwavering compassion.

His death in 1860 from pneumonia a stomach hemorrhage and complications from his birth defect did not mark an end but a transition. Pope Pius XII canonized him in 1947 recognizing his tireless work for the poor and imprisoned. This monument stands as a constant reminder of his enduring impact on Turin and the world. His devotion to the prisoners is a beacon of hope a reminder of the transformative power of faith even in the face of death.
