Founded in 1980 Gilroy Catholic College stands proudly. It occupies land once home to St Gabriel’s School for the Hearing Impaired. Existing buildings were repurposed for the new college. Initially a Year 7 to Year 10 school Gilroy expanded to Year 12 in 1982. The first Year 12 students sat their HSC exams in 1985. The student population quickly grew exceeding 1000.
Gilroy Catholic College is named after Cardinal Sir Norman Thomas Gilroy. He was the first Australian-born cardinal. The college adopted his motto Christ is my light. This reflects the school’s strong Catholic identity. The college’s commitment to faith education is unwavering. It strives to create responsible global citizens. Students are encouraged to think critically and creatively. Collaborative work is also a key focus. Technology is embraced in the learning process.
Gilroy’s history is rich with stories. It was initially supported by three local parishes. These were St Bernadette’s St Michael’s and Our Lady of Lourdes. Brother Damien Harvey FSC was Gilroy’s first principal. His faith-filled leadership was influential. He guided the college for many years setting a strong foundation. Peter White succeeded him in 1986 continuing his legacy. He oversaw the college’s growth and development.
In 2008 a news report highlighted Gilroy’s government funding. Analysis showed Gilroy received significantly more than its entitled amount. This was based on the socioeconomic status formula. Gilroy’s success attracts students. It boasts a large student population of around 1284 students. The school’s academic cultural and sporting achievements are also noteworthy. Notable alumni include Olympian Fiona Crawford and cricketer Sean Abbott. Their success reflects Gilroy’s comprehensive approach to education.
