Contemplate this: a celestial visitor crashing into Namibia millennia ago. These are the Gibeon Meteorites. We’re standing before a collection of these space travelers right here in Windhoek. These iron masses aren’t just rocks. They’re messengers from the vast expanse of space.

The Gibeon Meteorites get their name from the nearby town of Gibeon. The Nama people were the first to discover these fragments. They recognized the meteorites’ potential long before scientists. The Nama crafted tools and weapons from the space rocks. Their assegais, or spears, were tipped with extraterrestrial iron.

In 1836, Captain J.E. Alexander collected meteorite samples. He sent them to London for analysis. John Herschel confirmed their otherworldly origin. Herschel is also known for naming moons of Saturn and Uranus.

Between 1911 and 1913, 33 Gibeon fragments were gathered. They were brought to Windhoek. Initially, they were displayed as a heap in Zoo Park. In 1950, these meteorites were proclaimed a National Monument. This protection extends to all meteorites found in Namibia. They cannot be removed or damaged.

Imagine the journey these meteorites undertook. They hurtled through space for billions of years. Eventually, Earth’s gravity captured them. They streaked across the sky as a brilliant fireball. The impact scattered fragments across a large area. This strewn field is one of the largest known. It stretches 390 kilometers long and 120 kilometers wide.

Gibeon meteorites are iron meteorites. They belong to chemical group IVA. They are primarily composed of iron and nickel. They also contain cobalt and phosphorus. The crystal structure is a fine octahedrite.

The Widmanstätten pattern is a key feature. This unique pattern is found within Gibeon meteorites. It’s appreciated by collectors and jewelry designers. Scientists believe these patterns formed over millions of years. The molten remnants cooled incredibly slowly. It is estimated that it took about 1000 years for these molten remnants of planetary core to cool by just 1 degree Celsius.

The largest collection of Gibeon Meteorites is right here in Windhoek. Once displayed in a fountain in Post Street Mall, only 29 pieces remain today due to theft. The Gibeon meteorites scattered across Namibia form one of the most extensive strewn fields on Earth. Fragments are still occasionally found, but remember it is illegal to collect or damage them.

As you observe these remnants, consider their age. These meteorites predate humanity. They hold secrets of the early solar system. They stand as a testament to the vastness of space. They remind us of the dynamic forces that shaped our planet. The Gibeon Meteorites are a tangible link to the cosmos, forever embedded in Namibia’s landscape and history.
