“Look at the size of those figures!” someone whispers beside you. You can’t help but chuckle, they’re hard to miss! Towering above us are the Giants, a captivating mural splashed across six massive concrete silos. This isn’t just any street art, this is the handiwork of OSGEMEOS, twin brothers from Brazil who are renowned for their vibrant, whimsical style. Commissioned by the Vancouver Biennale in 2014, the Giants Mural is a 360-degree masterpiece, covering an astounding 23,500 square feet. This makes it the largest public mural in OSGEMEOS’s illustrious career. The brothers, Gustavo and Otavio Pandolfo, wanted to break away from traditional two-dimensional murals. They were drawn to these silos on Granville Island, not just for their size, but for their unique three-dimensional quality. They envisioned a dialogue between their art and the industrial landscape. The mural cost around $180,000, a testament to the scale and ambition of the project. Part of the funding was even raised through a crowdfunding campaign, highlighting the community’s excitement and support for the project. The result is a striking landmark that brightens the industrial area. The Giants seem to watch over the bustling market and waterfront, a playful addition to Vancouver’s skyline and a reminder of the power of public art.
