What if I told you a tale of a theatre born from war and immigration? It’s the story of Gesher Theatre.

In 1991 during the Gulf War, Yevgeny Arye led a group of Russian actors to Israel. Arye was a prominent stage director from Moscow. They founded Gesher which means bridge in Hebrew.

Imagine actors rehearsing in a Tel Aviv cellar. Sirens wailed. Gas masks became part of their costumes as they ran to shelters. But their dream persisted.

Gesher’s first production was Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. It debuted in April 1991. The response was incredible. Critics called it the Russian Miracle of Israeli Theatre.

Gesher became a bridge between cultures. It is the only immigrant theatre in the world that has thrived for so long. Rehearsals happened in three languages. The same actors performed in both Hebrew and Russian.

Gesher Theatre has achieved much. It has staged over 60 productions. It has represented Israel in over 17 international festivals. The Times praised it as one of the greatest troupes in the world.

Gesher combines Russian theatre traditions with innovative approaches. This unique style has become its trademark.

Many awards have been bestowed on Gesher. These include The Chairman of the Knesset Award and The Igal Allon Award. Bar-Ilan University gave Gesher a special honorary title. The Israel Lions Award and the Ruppin Academic Center Honorary Award followed.

Yevgeny Arye’s artistic vision drove Gesher’s success. His energy and the actors’ dedication made it possible. Gesher has a permanent home in Jaffa. This is where they continue to create.

Gesher produces classical plays and contemporary works. It adapts novels to present-day artistic notions. The theatre strives to create a unique experience.

Gesher Theatre has truly lived up to its name. It bridges cultures. It connects people through the power of theatre. It is a story of resilience and artistic triumph.
