Perhaps the most compelling story of Gerbrunn lies not in grand battles but in its humble origins. Gerbrunn is a municipality in the district of Würzburg. It sits in Bavaria in Germany. This village is only about 3 km from Würzburg.
But how did Gerbrunn get its unique name? The name “Gerbrunn” comes from two old words. “Ger” means throwing spear. It describes how the village looked long ago. “Brunn” means source. It refers to the water source still flowing near the city hall. So Gerbrunn means “spear source”.
However some say that the “Ger” in Gerbrunn comes from Gerwine. Gerwine was a rich Frankish person. Gerwine owned a water source in Gerbrunn. This source was called “Gerwines Brunnen”. Another story says “Ger” comes from “Gerstrauß”. This was a local dish.
In 1107, Gerbrunn appeared in an official document. This is the first known record of the village. Egispert and his wife Mahtild gave their vineyard to St. Stephan monastery in Würzburg. This shows Gerbrunn was a wine-growing area early on.
Over the centuries, Gerbrunn’s ownership changed. It was part of Hochstift Würzburg until 1803. Then it became part of Bayern. Later, it belonged to the Grand Duchy of Würzburg. Finally, in 1814, it returned to Bayern. The community formed in 1818 through municipal edict.

Gerbrunn sits on a high area above Würzburg. It borders Mönchberg, Hubland, and Gartenstadt Keesburg. It also borders Rottendorf and Randersacker. Besides the main village, there is Gieshügel farm and Roßsteige settlement.

From 1212, Gerbrunn was owned by the County of Castell. King Heinrich VII and Kaiser Friedrich II gave their royal estate to the Würzburg Commandery. In 1278, Graf Heinrich II sold his farm to the German Order. In 1625, Graf Gottfried sold Gerbrunn to Prince-Bishop Philipp Adolf.
Gerbrunn became Catholic again. North of Gerbrunn is the “Römerbrücke”. It was built in the 18th century but abandoned due to disrepair. The Flürle is a nature reserve east of the village. It features dry grassland.
