Gerasdorf bei Wien sits in the Weinviertel. It is located on Vienna’s northern city boundary. For years, it was the only Wien-Umgebung district municipality north of the Danube.
The area of Gerasdorf bei Wien covers about 35 square kilometers. A small part of it is wooded.
Gerasdorf bei Wien includes Gerasdorf and Seyring. There are also smaller areas like Kapellerfeld and Oberlisse.
Until 1848, powerful landowners controlled Gerasdorf and Seyring. After 1849, Gerasdorf and Seyring became independent communities.
In 1938, the area was integrated into Greater Vienna. Then, in 1954, Gerasdorf was returned to Lower Austria.
Seyring became part of Gerasdorf in 1972. Gerasdorf was then granted market town status in 1992. In 1998, it officially became a town.

During World War II, Seyring had a military airfield. It was codenamed “Wetterfrosch”. It served the German Luftwaffe. Allied air attacks targeted this airfield from 1944.
In 2015, there was a proposal to dissolve the Wien-Umgebung district. Gerasdorf residents voted to join the Korneuburg district instead.
Several faiths have a home in Gerasdorf bei Wien. There are Roman Catholic parishes in Gerasdorf. This includes Oberlisse and Kapellerfeld. There is also one in Seyring. An Evangelical church also stands in Gerasdorf.
The town’s council has 37 members. Hans Jürgen Peitzmeier has been Gerasdorf’s mayor since 2024.
