Behold the Georgetown University Astronomical Observatory. A marvel of Greek Revival architecture it stands proudly on a campus knoll. This isn’t just any building. It’s the third oldest astronomical observatory in the entire United States.

Father James Curley a self-taught mathematician planned and oversaw its construction between 1841 and 1844. Imagine the dedication involved. He was a true pioneer of astronomy. The observatory was originally funded by two Georgetown professors. Rev Thomas Meredith Jenkins SJ and Rev Charles H Stonestreet SJ. They believed in the power of scientific discovery.

Its first instrument arrived in 1844. At that time only two other observatories existed in the country. This placed Georgetown at the forefront of astronomical research. In 1846 the observatory played a vital role. It was used to determine the precise latitude and longitude of Washington DC. Father Curley himself meticulously calculated these coordinates. He documented Washington’s weather for fifty years.

Father John Hagen arrived in 1888. He oversaw renovations and a new telescope was purchased. This allowed for groundbreaking research on the Earth’s rotation rate. His findings were published in his influential *Synopsis*. Hagen’s work was a landmark achievement for the observatory.

Sadly the observatory eventually fell into disuse. Light pollution from the growing city made observations challenging. The giant telescope proved impractical. Eventually Georgetown’s astronomy department closed. The building was repurposed. It became storage for Potomac River water samples.

Today however the Georgetown University Astronomical Observatory is cherished. It’s a testament to a bygone era of scientific exploration. The Georgetown University Astronomical Society maintains the observatory. They keep its legacy alive through stargazing events and educational outreach programs. The observatory stands as a reminder. It shows the enduring human thirst for knowledge about the universe. This historic landmark is a source of pride for Georgetown University. A symbol of the pursuit of knowledge and a remarkable piece of American history.
