In 1769, a small group of Lutherans sought to establish a place of worship. They laid the foundation for what we now know as Georgetown Lutheran Church. The first structure was a humble log cabin, built on the very spot where we stand. Imagine the pioneers, their hands rough from labor, raising those logs with faith and determination. This first sanctuary was more than just a building. It was a symbol of their resilience, a testament to their unwavering belief. A steeple, crowned with a bell cast in England, was added around 1790. That bell, imagine its clear tones echoing through the early days of Georgetown. Can you hear it calling the faithful to worship, marking the passage of time, and perhaps even tolling for those laid to rest in the churchyard? Georgetown Lutheran Church is the oldest Lutheran congregation in Washington, D.C., predating the city’s designation as the nation’s capital by over three decades. The original log structure eventually gave way to a frame building around 1835. This second church served the community for another thirty years. A third sanctuary, built of brick in 1867, housed both worship services and a German language school. The congregation transitioned to English in 1870 and renovated the building, adding gas lighting and a fresh coat of paint. The current sanctuary, built of Potomac limestone and grey slate, was completed in 1915. This magnificent structure was made possible by a generous bequest from Daniel Eli, a dedicated member of the congregation. Look closely at the Tiffany-style stained-glass windows, each one a work of art. These windows were meticulously cleaned during the church’s 250th-anniversary renovations, revealing vibrant colors and intricate details. Inside, some of the original pews, the altar, and the Communion railing still grace the sanctuary. They are tangible links to the past, connecting us to generations who worshipped here before us. In the front of the sanctuary, the Möller pipe organ, installed in 1919, stands as a testament to the church’s rich musical heritage. Georgetown Lutheran Church isn’t just a building; it’s a living testament to faith, resilience, and the enduring spirit of a community.
