We stand before the Général Leclerc monument, a tribute to the man who forged that unlikely link. This monument, a bronze statue and Vosges sandstone obelisk in Place Broglie, embodies a promise made and kept. Général Leclerc, or Philippe de Hauteclocque as he was then known, made a vow in Koufra, Libya, in 1941. He swore to his men they would not lay down their arms until the French flag flew again over Strasbourg Cathedral. The Général Leclerc monument isn’t just about a statue. It represents the culmination of that oath. On November 23, 1944, Leclerc and his 2nd Armored Division liberated Strasbourg. They achieved a stunning victory, surprising the German occupiers and their collaborators. Imagine the scene: trams filled with unsuspecting passengers, German officials going about their day, suddenly interrupted by the rumble of Allied tanks. Général Leclerc’s forces swiftly secured key locations. The German commander, Général Vaterrodt, barely escaped across the Rhine, leaving thousands of German civilians and soldiers as prisoners. Though the main bridge to Kehl remained heavily defended, the French flag soon flew over Strasbourg Cathedral, a moment of immense symbolic weight.
