Before you stands Gemeindehaus Unter Gottes Gnaden a testament to faith and perseverance. This unassuming building in Cologne’s Widdersdorf district holds a rich history. It wasn’t always here. For years the approximately 450 Protestant residents of the predominantly Catholic Widdersdorf longed for a place of their own. They dreamed of a community space. Their first services were held in the basement of a school in 1964. Imagine the cramped quarters the shared hope.
Then came a small pavilion in 1966. It served as their temporary sanctuary for twenty years. This makeshift space accommodated a growing congregation reaching 600 members. Simultaneously construction began on a permanent building. Finally in 1988 Gemeindehaus Unter Gottes Gnaden was dedicated. It was named after a local land designation a fitting tribute to the community’s unwavering faith.
The name Unter Gottes Gnaden Under God’s Grace speaks volumes. It reflects the long wait the many challenges overcome. The building itself is a symbol of resilience. It shows the dedication of a community that refused to be deterred. The community faced immense challenges securing their own space for worship.
This wasn’t the only struggle. The Protestants in nearby Geyen Sinthern and Manstedten endured an even longer wait for their own community space. Some sought refuge in neighboring churches others felt lost unsure of where they belonged. The situation improved significantly with the opening of a small church shop in 1992. It offered a vital community hub. This eventually led to regular Sunday services.
Today Gemeindehaus Unter Gottes Gnaden is more than a place of worship. It’s a vibrant center for the Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Ichthys. It houses numerous activities including services and events catering to the needs of the community. The large number of young families shows that the community continues to thrive. This place is a living testimony to the power of faith the importance of community. And the enduring spirit of those who sought a place to gather under God’s grace. So let us appreciate this unassuming building. It represents so much more than bricks and mortar. It embodies the strength and devotion of the community that built it.
