“Engine repair” echoes from the past. We are standing before Gehring Technologies. This company started as a humble workshop in 1926. It repaired engines in Naumburg an der Saale. No one imagined its future impact on the automotive industry.

Let’s delve into the story of Gehring Technologies. It’s a story of innovation and global impact. The company’s headquarters are now in Ostfildern near Stuttgart. It is a global engineering company. Its primary focus is on honing technologies and e-mobility.

Just eight years after its founding, Gehring introduced a sensation. It was the world’s first honing machine. Even the automotive and aviation sectors were impressed. This marked the beginning of an exciting journey.

Over the years, Gehring Group became a pioneer in honing. They achieved this through many innovative technologies. Honing is a precision machining process. It refines the surface of a bore or cylinder. This ensures optimal performance and longevity.

In 1941, Gehring built its first honing machines. These machines featured hydraulic stroke drive and central lubrication. They also had honing oil preparation. These innovations improved efficiency and precision.

After World War II in 1948, Gehring made a fresh start. They established a machine factory in Ruit. Ruit is located on the Filder plain near Stuttgart.

The 1960s brought more advancements. Gehring introduced plateau honing for internal combustion engines. Plateau honing creates a specific surface finish. This reduces friction and improves engine performance.

In 1961, Gehring constructed the first honing machine. This machine featured pneumatic in-process measurement. This allowed for real-time monitoring and adjustments. It ensured greater accuracy.

Direct cooling was introduced in 1966. Gehring built the first honing tool with this feature. Direct cooling prevents overheating. It extends the life of the tool.

The Gehring cylindromatics were introduced in 1975. This further enhanced the precision of honing processes.

By 1977, Gehring achieved remarkable precision. They honed parts for diesel injection technology. They achieved a cylinder shape of less than 1 μm. This was in large-scale production.

In 1979, Diato GmbH was founded. This company manufactures diamond and CBN cutting blades. These blades are essential for honing tools.

Gehring presented the first NC-controlled honing machines in 1989. This happened at the International Mechanical Engineering Trade Fair EMO. NC control means numerical control. It allows for automated and precise honing.

Laser technology was introduced in 1992. Gehring started laser honing of combustion engines. This further refined the honing process.

The lifehone series was developed in 2006. This series is for small diameters. This expanded Gehring’s capabilities.

Position honing was introduced in 2007. The powertrainhone machine series was also developed. These innovations improved honing precision.

In 2010, Gehring introduced form honing. They developed honing of diameters ≤ 0.8 mm to series maturity.

Gehring celebrated its 90th company anniversary in 2016. They also founded the Gehring Academy.

In 2018, Gehring and copperING joined forces. copperING specializes in the production of electric drives. They developed laser roughening together.

Gehring became part of the NAGEL Group in 2020. This strengthened their market position.

In 2021, Gehring began a cooperation with WAFIOS AG. This collaboration expanded their technological capabilities.

A cooperation with Daimler Truck AG began in 2022. The first e-mobility line became an order.

Today, Gehring Technologies plays a pivotal role. It contributes to stator production and electromobility. Their technologies significantly advance the automotive industry. They increase its efficiency. This legacy reaches far into the future of mobility. It all started with a small workshop in Naumburg.
