What stands before us is more than just stone. Gefallenendenkmal Christ-König is a poignant reminder. It stands in Cologne Southern Cemetery. This cemetery is locally known as Koln Sudfriedhof. It is about 5 kilometers south of Cologne’s center.

The Cologne Memorial commemorates 25 United Kingdom servicemen. They died in Germany. They have no known grave. Nineteen died as prisoners. Their burial places are not recorded. Six died after the Armistice by drowning. Their bodies were not recovered.

Cologne Southern Cemetery holds over 1,000 Allied prisoners. They died during the First World War. German servicemen are also buried here. After the Armistice, the occupying garrison used it.

In 1922, a decision was made. Commonwealth servicemen graves were scattered all over Germany. They would be brought together into four permanent cemeteries. Cologne Southern was chosen. In 1923, graves came from 183 burial grounds. These were in Hanover, Hesse, the Rhine, and Westphalia.

Now, 2,482 First World War servicemen are buried or commemorated here. This includes special memorials. These honor casualties buried in other German cemeteries. Their graves could not be found.

The Commonwealth section contains 132 Second World War graves. Most are servicemen who died with the occupying forces. There are 676 non-war graves. There are also 29 burials of other nationalities.

The Cologne Memorial panels sit inside the north shelter. This shelter is at the entrance to the Commonwealth plots. Sir Robert Lorimer designed the memorial.

Consider the journey these men took. Many were prisoners far from home. They represent countless others. Their final resting place is here in Cologne. The Gefallenendenkmal Christ-König ensures their sacrifice is not forgotten. It offers a place for remembrance. It provides a space for reflection. It allows us to honor their memory.

Visiting this memorial is a moving experience. It is a testament to the human cost of war. The Gefallenendenkmal Christ-König serves as a constant reminder. It urges us to strive for peace. It encourages understanding among nations. The cemetery is open daily. April to October hours are 7:00 to 20:00. November to March hours are 8:00 to 17:00. Wheelchair access is available via the main entrance.
