From a twisted square of Corten steel, a gateway emerges. This, my friends, is the Gate to the Northwest Passage. Here in Vancouver’s Vanier Park, this striking sculpture stands as a testament to Captain George Vancouver’s arrival in Burrard Inlet in 1792. Created by artist Alan Chung Hung, the Gate to the Northwest Passage wasn’t always appreciated. Initially met with criticism, some even calling it a “monstrosity,” this 15-foot tall sculpture, made of rusting Corten steel, has become a beloved landmark. The sculpture was commissioned by Parks Canada in 1979. The guidelines were strict. The artwork had to be made of a permanent material, not wood, and it couldn’t depict a man. Interestingly, the design of the Gate to the Northwest Passage was inspired by 18th-century navigational tools. Think of plane tables and quadrants. The twisted metal evokes the spirit of exploration and discovery. Hung himself stated that the sculpture was meant to symbolize Captain Vancouver’s contribution to the world. His meticulous surveys of the North Pacific coast were groundbreaking. Now, as you stand before the Gate to the Northwest Passage, take a moment to appreciate its unique form. Imagine the voyages of discovery that took place in these very waters. Picture the ships sailing through, charting unknown territories. The Gate frames stunning views of English Bay, the North Shore Mountains, and the city skyline. It serves as a constant reminder of Vancouver’s rich maritime history. It symbolizes the gateway to adventure and the enduring spirit of exploration.
