Forgotten souls rest here. We stand before Garrawarra Hospital Cemetery. This wasn’t always a quiet place. For nearly fifty years from 1909 to 1949 this secluded bushland cemetery served a heartbreaking purpose. It was the final resting place for over 2000 tuberculosis patients. These patients came from the nearby Waterfall Sanatorium. Now known as the Garrawarra Centre for Aged Care.
Imagine the journey these individuals undertook. Many believed a move to Australia offered a cure for their illness. They came seeking hope only to find their final resting place in this forgotten corner of the Illawarra. Garrawarra Hospital Cemetery holds their stories. Stories of hope and despair. Of families separated by distance and disease. Many arrived from England alone. They died without the comfort of loved ones.
The cemetery itself tells a story. The overgrown vines once hid it from view. It was rediscovered in 2012. Around 54 marked graves still hold headstones. Others remain unmarked. There are numbered pegs. Sadly many were destroyed by a bushfire in 2001. Vandalism also marred the cemetery. The layout reflected religious practices. Sections were designated for Roman Catholics Presbyterians and members of the Church of England. However during the height of the epidemic there was little time for formalities.
The lack of maintained records adds to the mystery. Researchers are working to restore this cemetery to its former dignity. They hope to recognize the sacrifices of those buried here. Their aim is to elevate Garrawarra Hospital Cemetery to a state or even a national heritage site. This would preserve its poignant history for generations to come.
Think of the lives lost here. The families separated. The hopes dashed. Garrawarra Hospital Cemetery isn’t just a graveyard. It is a testament to a dark chapter in medical history. It is a poignant reminder of the enduring power of human resilience and the importance of remembering those we have lost. It is also a powerful reminder of the importance of community remembrance and historical preservation. Let us remember the forgotten souls of Garrawarra.
