In the heart of Strasbourg’s bustling port district lies a silent giant, the Gare de Strasbourg Port du Rhin. What secrets does this seemingly unassuming building hold? Let’s uncover them together. The Gare de Strasbourg Port du Rhin isn’t your typical bustling train station. It stands as a testament to Strasbourg’s rich industrial heritage, a place where the echoes of a bygone era of passenger travel and thriving freight transport still linger. Built in the early 20th century by the Imperial General Directorate of Alsace-Lorraine Railways, the Gare de Strasbourg Port du Rhin initially served both passengers and freight. Imagine the hustle and bustle of workers, the clang of machinery, and the hiss of steam engines as trains arrived and departed. This station wasn’t just a transit point; it was the lifeblood of the port. The Gare de Strasbourg Port du Rhin even boasted a passenger station, a charming pink sandstone building with a central platform. Access to this platform was via a stairway beneath the railway bridge. A nearby service building housed the station managers. The freight station, known as the “local station”, stood near the Bassin du Commerce. Numerous branch lines snaked their way through the port, connecting various basins and businesses. The Gare de Strasbourg Port du Rhin witnessed a shift in ownership after World War I, becoming part of the Administration of Alsace and Lorraine Railways. Later, it was integrated into the SNCF network. The station’s freight yard expanded in 1920, reflecting the port’s increasing traffic. In 1929, seven daily round trips connected the station to Appenweier. Passenger services continued into the early 1950s. However, the construction of a new Rhine bridge between 1956 and 1958 led to the demolition of the passenger platform and building, marking the end of an era. A new office building now occupies the site. Today, the Gare de Strasbourg Port du Rhin focuses solely on freight traffic. It serves the autonomous port of Strasbourg and stands as the last French station before the Rhine bridge and the German border. Interestingly, due to the track layout, trains cannot directly enter or exit from Germany. They must reverse direction at Strasbourg-Neudorf. The Gare de Strasbourg Port du Rhin remains a vital part of the port’s infrastructure, handling a significant volume of freight and contributing to Strasbourg’s economic dynamism. Although quieter now, the station’s history echoes within its walls. It’s a place where the ghosts of passengers past mingle with the rumble of modern freight trains, a silent testament to the enduring power of industry and connection.
