Did the groundskeeper at Gardener’s Lodge ever imagine his humble abode would become a vegan haven? Gardener’s Lodge sits quietly in Victoria Park. This charming Victorian Gothic Revival style cottage was designed by James Barnet and built in 1885. It originally housed the groundskeeper who meticulously tended the sprawling lawns and gardens of the nearby University of Sydney. Gardener’s Lodge has seen quite a transformation over the years. In 1911, ownership shifted to the City of Sydney. The building then took on a less glamorous role, serving as public toilets until the mid-1980s. Thankfully, its story didn’t end there. A loving restoration in 2012 breathed new life into Gardener’s Lodge. It emerged as a unique cafe, a testament to its enduring charm. Today, within its historic sandstone walls, you can savor delicious plant-based cuisine. The heritage-listed building offers a unique dining experience. It blends the old-world charm of its past with the contemporary ethos of veganism. The groundskeeper’s former home now welcomes visitors to enjoy good food and coffee in a setting rich with history.
