Chugga chugga chugga. That’s the sound of the Galston Valley Railway. A miniature railway it may be but its story is anything but small. Nestled in the bushland near Galston this 1km track winds through the hills. It’s a picturesque setting for a unique event the Galston500.
This annual race challenges model locomotive teams. Their goal is to complete 500 laps. The event raises money for Multiple Sclerosis research. It’s a heartwarming story started by Allie Thackray. Diagnosed with MS in 2013 she and her husband Evan married at the railway in 2017. They combined their love of model trains with a cause close to their hearts.
Since its beginning the Galston500 has raised over $46000. The money goes directly to researchers at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research. This year’s event promises even more excitement. There will be rides for the public. They can even get a ride behind some of the participating locomotives. Plenty of entertainment is planned on and off the track.
Besides the race itself there are other attractions. There’s food and drinks. A coffee van supports people with special needs. The Harmonix Big Band and the Hornsby RSL Pipe Band will perform. The Galston Rural Fire Brigade will be there too. Their fire truck is a sight to behold. Don’t forget the People’s Choice Award. Teams decorate their locomotives. You can vote by donating to your favourite.
The Galston Valley Railway isn’t just a venue for the Galston500. It’s open to the public on the second Sunday of each month. Rides are available. You can explore the beautiful bushland setting. Please note though the railway is not wheelchair friendly. Wear fully enclosed footwear. The steam trains are hot. They emit smoke steam oil sparks and hot cinders.
