From a bird’s-eye view, Galson Gorge unfolds like a lush, green ribbon, winding its way through the rugged terrain. Galson Gorge Lookout offers a breathtaking panorama of this natural wonder. The lookout, accessible to all, thanks to its wheelchair-friendly design, is operated by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. They’re the guardians of this precious space, ensuring it remains open from sunrise to sunset. Galson Gorge itself isn’t just a feast for the eyes. It’s a vital artery connecting Galston and Hornsby Heights. A drive through the gorge along Galston Road offers a thrilling 20-25 minute journey, a stark contrast to the 40-45 minute detour via Boundary Road. This route, however, isn’t for the faint of heart. Six hairpin bends and a steady 5% incline over three kilometers present a challenge, especially for larger vehicles. In fact, vehicles over 7.5 meters in length are strictly prohibited. This is due to the numerous incidents involving oversized trucks getting stuck, sometimes even damaging the historic Tunks Creek Bridge. At the heart of Galson Gorge lies this very bridge, a testament to 19th-century engineering. Built in 1893 as a McDonald timber truss bridge, it now stands as a heritage-listed landmark. Nearby, a more modern structure, the Steel Military Bridge, spans Berowra Creek. Installed in 1965, it serves as a vital access route for firefighting vehicles between Hornsby and Dural. Beyond the bridges and roads, Galson Gorge beckons adventurers. Walking tracks crisscross the area, offering glimpses of hidden waterfalls and diverse flora. The Benowie Walking Track, part of the epic Great North Walk from Sydney Cove to Newcastle, winds through the gorge. This 25km trail, accessible from six different points, even offers overnight camping opportunities at the Galston Gorge Campsite, though be warned, amenities are basic. Galson Gorge is a symphony of life. Native birds like honeyeaters, fantails, and parrots fill the air with their melodies, while waterbirds such as the Pied Cormorant and White Faced Heron grace Berowra Creek. Keep your eyes peeled for the elusive Satin Bowerbird and Lyrebird. The gorge’s flora is equally captivating, with stands of Grey Myrtle, ferns, and water gums thriving near Berowra Creek. The air here is alive with the sounds of nature, the rustling of leaves, and the distant calls of nocturnal marsupials.
