In a city known for its vibrant energy, Gallant Garden offers a quiet space for reflection. Gallant Garden is a unique cemetery in Hong Kong. It serves as the final resting place for civil servants who died in the line of duty. The garden was established in November 1996 within the larger Wo Hop Shek Public Cemetery. Gallant Garden provides different types of burial options. It has spaces for traditional earth burials, urn placements, and a columbarium with niches for ashes. Initially, due to land limitations, even burials at Gallant Garden were subject to the six-year exhumation policy. This meant that remains were exhumed after six years and either re-interred in urn spaces or cremated and placed in niches within the garden. However, a change occurred in September 2000. The government decided to grant permanent earth burials at Gallant Garden to civil servants who died performing extraordinary acts of bravery. These acts typically involve posthumous recognition with a bravery medal. This medal is awarded by the Chief Executive based on recommendations from the Honours and Non-official Justices of the Peace Selection Committee. Gallant Garden at Wo Hop Shek Public Cemetery stands as a tribute. It reminds us of the dedication and sacrifices made by civil servants in Hong Kong.
