Peeking through the doors of Gaithersburg High School students carry dreams as big as the building itself. Gaithersburg High School is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a launchpad for future leaders.
Gaithersburg High School first opened its doors in 1904. It was originally named Gaithersburg School. Back then it housed grades K-12 all in one place. The original Gaithersburg High School was located on North Summit Avenue. Today Gaithersburg Elementary School stands on that very spot.
Fast forward to 1951 and Gaithersburg High School got a new building. It was built on South Summit Avenue. Over the years the building expanded to accommodate more students. In 1978 the A B C and N wings underwent a complete renovation. A new wing was added in 2007.
From 2011 to 2013 Gaithersburg High School underwent a major transformation. A brand new school building was constructed on the grounds. The old building was torn down except for the 2007 wing and Newman Auditorium. The new building was integrated into the surviving portions of the old school. From 1951 to 2013 the address was 314 South Frederick Avenue. The school now sits at 101 Education Boulevard.
Gaithersburg High School serves students in Gaithersburg. Forest Oak Middle School and Gaithersburg Middle School are its feeder schools. These middle schools receive students from eight elementary schools.
Gaithersburg High School boasts a diverse student body. In 2022 59.6% of students were of Hispanic origin. African American students made up 21.4%. White students accounted for 9.6%. Asian American students comprised 6.4%. The student population was 54% male and 46% female. Over half the students 57.6% were eligible for free and reduced-price meals.
Gaithersburg High School offers a variety of classes. Students can explore interests from Navy Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps to Cosmetology. There is also Hospitality and Tourism and Project Lead The Way Biomedical Science. Gaithersburg High School also features an Academy of Finance and an Academy of Information Technology.
The school’s motto is Knowledge is power. The school colors are blue and gold. The mascot is the Trojans.
Gaithersburg High School has a rich athletic history. The school has celebrated state championships in various sports. These include Boys Cross Country Boys Track and Field and Football. Boys Basketball and Girls Volleyball have also won state titles.
Many notable alumni have walked the halls of Gaithersburg High School. Tosin Abasi is a guitarist. Dominique Dawes is an Olympic gymnast. Logic is a rapper. Jodie Turner-Smith is an actor. These alumni have made their mark in various fields.
Gaithersburg High School continues to evolve. It adapts to meet the needs of its students and community. The school prepares students for success in college and beyond.
