Robert Hurrell’s dairy farm. That’s where our story about Gables begins. It was a sprawling property, so large it was divided into two: Blue Gables and Red Gables. Imagine the cows grazing, the milkmaids bustling, the scent of fresh hay in the air. This pastoral scene is the very heart of Gables’ history. Gables, a relatively new suburb of Sydney, officially gazetted in 2020, owes its name to these humble beginnings. The name, a nod to the original farm divisions, is a charming reminder of the area’s agricultural past. Gables sits nestled in the Hills District, about 52 kilometers northwest of Sydney’s bustling central business district. It’s a tranquil escape from the city, while still being within easy reach. Now, Gables is undergoing a transformation. Stockland, a major property developer, is creating a master-planned community here, the largest in the Hills District. Spanning over 330 hectares, this project envisions a vibrant hub with over 4,000 dwellings, a primary school, sports fields, a town center, and even a picturesque 4-hectare lake. But the story of development isn’t without its twists. Before Stockland, another developer, Celestino, had begun the work. They laid the groundwork, building nearly 1,000 homes before selling the remaining land in 2020. The baton was passed, but the vision of a thriving community continued. Gables isn’t just about houses; it’s about education too. The Santa Sophia Catholic College opened its doors to students in 2022, a state-of-the-art campus serving kindergarten through year 12. This addition solidified Gables as a place for families to grow and learn. Getting around Gables is easy thanks to several bus routes connecting it to nearby train stations like Rouse Hill and Riverstone. As Gables evolves, it holds onto its past, the echoes of Robert Hurrell’s dairy farm still present in its name and its peaceful ambiance. This blend of old and new, of rural charm and modern development, makes Gables a unique and fascinating place to explore.
