Have you heard whispers of the twin peaks, Fung and Wong? Fung Wong Tau, or Phoenix Mountain, stands proudly on Lantau Island. It’s the second highest peak in Hong Kong. Its name, Fung Wong Shan, literally translates to “Phoenix Mountain”. The mountain is formed by two peaks, Fung Fung (male phoenix summit) and Wong Fung (female phoenix summit). Fung Wong Tau is a prominent feature of Lantau South Country Park. Hikers can reach it via the Lantau Trail. At its base, you’ll discover the Wisdom Path. The mountain’s volcanic rock composition, including porphyritic rhyolites, links it geologically to other Hong Kong giants like Tai Mo Shan. Interestingly, Fung Wong Tau is also the source of the Tung Chung River, a major waterway on Lantau Island. Standing atop Fung Wong Tau, you’d experience a unique subtropical highland climate. Strong winds and frequent fog are common. Winters are cold, sometimes dropping below freezing. Summers are warm but moderate, rarely exceeding the low 20s Celsius. From this vantage point, you can imagine the phoenix rising, its wings catching the mists that swirl around this majestic peak.
