Venture just a bit further to discover a haven of peace, the Fukusenji Temple. Founded in 1912, Fukusenji Temple is a Shingon-sect Buddhist temple. The temple is located in Tono, Iwate Prefecture, also known as the city of folklore.

Have you ever seen Japan’s largest wooden Buddhist sculpture? Fukusenji Temple is home to the Fukutoku Kannon. This statue is the largest wooden Kannon in Japan. It stands 17 meters tall and weighs 25 tons. Its face alone measures 2.4 meters. The statue, covered in gold leaf, took nearly 12 years to complete, finally being finished in 1963.

Imagine the craftsmanship. The Kannon Bosatsu statue was carved from a single tree. Photography isn’t allowed inside the main hall. You can still feel its imposing presence.

Next to the main hall stands a Tahoto pagoda. It was built in 1982. The pagoda enshrines the Godai Myo-o. These are the Five Great Wisdom Kings. It also houses the Shittenou. These are the Four Heavenly Kings.

The temple also features a five-story pagoda. Kikuchi Kyoji, a famous miyadaiku temple carpenter, erected it in 1990.

Fukusenji Temple is known for its beautiful cherry blossoms. Visit in late April for the full experience. Fall foliage in October is equally stunning. The temple attracts many visitors all year round.

Fukusenji Temple is more than just a religious site. It is a place of art, history, and natural beauty. It offers a glimpse into the heart of Tono’s folklore. Take your time exploring this remarkable temple. Reflect on the artistry and the peaceful atmosphere. You will leave with a sense of awe and tranquility.
