Tucked away in a bustling alleyway stands Fuk Tak Temple. This unassuming temple holds a rich history. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a community.

Fuk Tak Temple originally stood near the Main Altar. However the temple was relocated. This was due to the expansion of the platform. The shrine within Fuk Tak Temple is dedicated to two important deities. These are Tudigong and Tudipo. Traditionally only Tudigong protected the shrine. However Sik Sik Yuen decided to invite both deities. This was to harmonize yin and yang energies. Tudigong is considered the Right God of Blessing and Virtue. Merchants especially venerate the Tudi gods. They see them as protectors of their businesses.

Fuk Tak Temple’s location next to a temporary market makes it easy to miss. Many people walk right by without noticing it. This small community shrine was built before 1900. It’s a significant landmark for Chinese workers. These workers hailed from the Kowloon Wharf. Residents in the surrounding neighborhood also frequented Fuk Tak Temple. The temple would fill with worshippers on special festivals. The first and fifteenth days of the first Chinese Lunar Month were especially busy. Incense and offerings filled the air.

In 1978 the Hong Kong Government planned to demolish Fuk Tak Temple. The plan was to build a larger Tsim Sha Tsui Market. Local residents protested. This saved Fuk Tak Temple from demolition. It was later rebuilt and renovated.
