Did the children at Fuji Elementary School ever imagine their school would be famous worldwide? Here at Fuji Elementary School in Tachikawa, Tokyo, the very design of the school is a lesson in itself. Fuji Elementary challenges traditional notions of what a school should be. The school’s unique architecture fosters a dynamic learning environment. This environment encourages exploration and free play.

Fuji Kindergarten, as it was formerly known, garnered international recognition. In 2011, the OECD hailed it as the most outstanding educational facility globally. This innovative school rejects the conventional “coddle and protect” approach to childhood education. Instead, it embraces a philosophy of freedom and self-discovery.

The school’s most striking feature is its open, elliptical design. There are no walls between classrooms. This creates a continuous, flowing space where learning transcends traditional boundaries. Above the classrooms, a gently sloping roof serves as a vast playground. Children run, jump, and invent games on this open expanse. They run an average of 2.5 miles per day. The architect, Takaharu Tezuka, intentionally designed the roof’s elliptical shape to cater to children’s natural instinct to run in circles.

Three zelkova trees grow through the classrooms and up through the roof. These trees act as natural jungle gyms. Safety nets around the trees allow children to climb freely, even encouraging intentional falls. A separate annex building, five meters tall with seven stories, further promotes exploration and climbing. It has minimal handrails and no padding.

This design might seem chaotic to some. However, the open environment and the freedom it provides have remarkable benefits. Children learn to concentrate amidst potential distractions. They develop decision-making skills. Even autistic children thrive in this setting, moving freely between areas and displaying less stereotypical behavior. The school also encourages a healthy lifestyle. Children are constantly active, developing athleticism beyond that of their peers in traditional kindergartens. At Fuji Elementary School, children learn not just academic subjects but also valuable life lessons. They learn resilience, cooperation, and self-reliance.
