What secrets does Lok Fu hold? Before you stands Lok Fu Estate a vibrant public housing estate in Kowloon. Its story is one of transformation resilience and community. Originally known as Lo Fu Ngam meaning Tiger Rock or Tiger’s Den the area’s name hinted at a wilder past. Legends speak of tigers roaming these hills. The last wild tiger in Hong Kong was killed in 1915. However residents felt the name Lo Fu Ngam was unlucky. Many had surnames associated with animals. They believed the name brought bad fortune. So they petitioned for a name change. After considering 24 options the government chose Lok Fu. It means happiness and prosperity a fitting name for this thriving community.

Lok Fu’s development is a testament to thoughtful planning. The first phase designed by Chung Wah Nan Architects prioritized well-being. It integrated an MTR station public housing a market a shopping mall and even serene Chinese gardens. Clever architectural details maximized sunlight and optimized space. The large open area in Zone A provided a welcoming communal space for residents. Many were former immigrants who became long-term residents.

The area is rich in cultural landmarks. A large Eight Immortals mural originally located on Wang Tau Hom South Road now graces Lok Fu Place. Nearby is the Tin Hau Temple. Built during the Qing dynasty it was rebuilt in the 1950s after surviving a typhoon and relocation. The temple remains a focal point for worship and cultural connection.

Lok Fu Market another success story showcases Hong Kong’s fresh market transformation. Once chaotic and slippery it now boasts improved ventilation hygiene and order. A rare live poultry stall continues to serve the community’s culinary traditions. This unique setup balances food safety with cultural needs.

Adjacent to the market is the Hong Kong Housing Authority Customer Service Centre. For generations this centre represented hope for homeownership. From 1978 to 2018 a manual lottery drawing machine determined the winners of subsidized housing. The anticipation surrounding each draw remains deeply rooted in the community.

Lok Fu Estate isn’t just a housing estate. It’s a microcosm of Hong Kong’s history a place where the past blends seamlessly with the present. It is a place where community and culture thrive. As you leave Lok Fu remember its story. Remember the transformation from Tiger Rock to a place of happiness and prosperity. Remember the resilience and the spirit of its people.
