“Fruarna”, or “The Women”, as the sculpture is known, stands in the heart of the Fruängen neighborhood in Stockholm. The three figures, carved from granite, are depicted as if engaged in conversation. They seem to be gossiping about the events of the day. You can almost hear their whispers. The nearby pond reflects their forms, doubling the number of characters, creating an intriguing visual interplay.

Willy Gordon, the artist behind these intriguing “Fruarna”, was inspired by cubism. However, his sculptures also bear a strong resemblance to crystals and molecular structures, reflecting his interest in the intricate details of form. Each figure is unique, with subtle variations in their posture and facial expressions. Gordon’s aim was to capture individual personalities, highlighting the diverse nature of women. The sculptor also paid homage to the neighborhood’s history. Fruängen, meaning “The Women’s Meadow”, is a testament to the area’s earlier connection to female figures, with streets named after famous women.

When you stand before this intriguing sculpture, you’re not just witnessing a piece of art. You are immersed in a conversation. The “Fruarna” seem to have whispered secrets and shared stories for centuries. Their stillness is deceptive. They are very much alive. The sculpture captures not just the beauty of the female form but also the essence of the neighborhood’s history, a testament to the enduring power of women and their voices.
