You might not guess it from its name, “Fröschen Brunnen”, but this fountain isn’t known for frogs at all. Instead, it’s a monument to Christoph Froschauer, a sixteenth-century printer who published the first full translation of the Bible into German. The fountain was designed and built in 1933, a time when Zurich was a major printing hub. The fountain’s central column was created from porous yellow limestone, a glacial stone from the region of Neuchâtel. It stands tall and proud, showcasing the historical significance of printing in Zurich. The limestone was especially selected for its ability to withstand the harsh weather conditions and the test of time. The boy riding the frog, a symbol of Christoph Froschauer, sits atop the column. But there’s a twist to the tale. The original frog signet was created by a stoneworker named Balthasar Bingiser, who lived in the 16th century. It wasn’t until 1585 that the signet was added to the fountain’s central column, further showcasing the historical significance of publishing in Zurich. Although the frog statue is not an actual frog, it is a popular symbol. This fountain stands as a reminder of Zurich’s historical role in the advancement of printing.
