“Did you ever stop to consider the sheer scale of artistic collaboration?” I ask. We are standing before “From a Model to a Rainbow”. This vibrant mosaic is more than just decoration. It is a testament to community and artistic vision.
“From a Model to a Rainbow” is a mosaic mural by Sam Gilliam. It is found at the Takoma Metrorail station in Washington D.C. This artwork transforms the station. It makes it more inviting for commuters.
The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities commissioned the mural. They partnered with the Metro Art in Transit Program. The goal was to enrich the Takoma neighborhood. They wanted to beautify the District’s public spaces.
Sam Gilliam was a renowned Color Field painter. His career spanned decades. He was known for his innovative use of hung and draped canvas. Gilliam also worked with plastics and sculptural elements.
“From a Model to a Rainbow” consists of multi-colored ceramic and glass tiles. These tiles are mounted on aluminum panels. The mural spans 400 square feet. It measures 14 feet high and 39 feet wide. The entire structure weighs 2000 pounds.
The artwork proposal was dramatic and colorful. Some initially doubted the real-world version could live up to the hype. Some thought the colors weren’t as dramatic as expected.
However, the mural quickly won hearts. Its energy and enthusiasm are palpable. Metro Board member Anthony Giancola praised Gilliam’s art. He said that the artwork makes the station more beautiful. It inspires a sense of belonging for riders.
Aryis Scales was the Interim Executive Director of the Arts Commission. He noted that “From a Model to a Rainbow” provides a vibrant gateway to Takoma. He said that public art is an important tool for economic revitalization. It creates a strong community identity.
Gilliam also had a lifelong commitment to teaching. He taught at Washington public schools. He also taught at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Gilliam taught at the University of Maryland and Carnegie Mellon too.
