Friendship United Methodist Church wasn’t built overnight. It began humbly in 1953. The congregation first met in Woodburn Elementary School. Imagine 97 people gathered for their first Sunday school session. That’s a powerful image of faith in action.
Rev J Carroll Fink became the first pastor. The first worship service had only 15 attendees. Yet from such small beginnings something incredible grew. Charter Sunday in January 1954 saw 53 new members. By February 7th 66 people became charter members. The name “Friendship” was chosen. It perfectly embodies the church’s spirit of community and outreach.
The first church building classrooms offices kitchen and auditorium was built in 1956. A groundbreaking service marked the start of construction. The first service in the new building took place on October 28 1956. This original structure served the congregation for many years.
By the late 1970s the church needed a sanctuary. The plan initially involved a separate building. But the decision was made to add it to the existing structure. Another groundbreaking service took place in 1988. Bishop Stockton led the ceremony. Pastor Fink returned for the consecration in 1989. This expanded church building stands as a symbol of growth and continued faith.
Friendship United Methodist Church has touched thousands of lives. For seventy years it has shared the gospel. The church continues to serve its community.
