Once upon a time, the old recreation center stood here. It was outdated and struggled to meet the growing needs of the community. In response, the city embarked on a project to create a new, state-of-the-art facility.
Construction began in late summer or early fall of 2015. The project reached completion in the spring of 2017. The new Friendship Recreation Center cost about $7.3 million. Fanning Howey served as the architect. Tompkins Construction was the general contractor.
The new Friendship Recreation Center boasts 4,500 square feet of space. Inside, you will find a large community room. It can hold up to 125 people. A lobby or gallery displays local art. A dedicated kids’ craft room supports the local coop. There is also ample storage and administrative space.
Outside, Friendship Recreation Center offers many improvements. Toddlers and older kids enjoy an updated playground. A new basketball court invites friendly competition. A splash pad provides cool relief on hot days. New landscaping and site amenities enhance the overall experience. These include benches and trash cans.
Friendship Recreation Center also has green features. It earned LEED Silver certification. This shows a commitment to sustainability.
Today, Friendship Recreation Center continues to evolve. Friends of Friendship Park actively supports the center. This non-profit organization assists the Department of Parks and Recreation. They help maintain and improve the park. The goal is a safe, clean, and beautiful space.
The center offers a wide array of amenities. Indoors, there is a multipurpose room. Outdoors, you will find a baseball field with a 90-foot diamond. A basketball court, playground, softball field with a 60-foot diamond, and tennis courts are also available.
