Did the name “Pappy Jim” ever ring a bell? He, along with Reverend Taylor, also known as “Shuffling John,” founded the Friendship M.B. Church. It was a humble beginning in the early spring of 1870 under a brush arbor, just behind where the church stands today. Imagine, a simple structure amidst the Florida landscape, marking the spot where faith took root. Friendship M.B. Church has witnessed Tampa’s evolution, from a modest settlement to the vibrant city it is today. The church’s journey started with Reverend James Williams and Reverend Taylor laying the foundation for a community of believers. In 1872, Reverend A.H. Davis, from Bolivar County, Mississippi, took the reins, guiding the growing congregation. The church continued its growth under Reverend H.W. Scott, who led the flock until 1920. Reverend S.S. Butler ushered Friendship M.B. Church into the modern age by installing the first electric lights. Progress continued under Reverend W.P. Whitfield, who served until 1950. Then came Reverend Curtis L. West, a man with a vision of expansion, leading the church until 1964. A significant chapter began in 1965 with the arrival of Dr. McKinley K. Nelson. His dynamic leadership over 36 years propelled Friendship M.B. Church to prominence within Tampa and the state. Following Dr. Nelson’s passing in 2001, Reverend Bobby Burks was elected, continuing the church’s legacy of faith and service. The church saw many improvements over the years. These included a new handicap accessible walkway, updated bathrooms at the front entrance, and additions to the finance room. Even a new P.A. system and alarm were installed. The sanctuary received a fresh coat of paint in 2003, courtesy of the Laymen Department, and new lighting was added. A set of drums, a gift from the Morrison family, now fills the sanctuary with vibrant rhythms. The church’s growth is not just physical. Under Pastor Burks, 85 new members have joined the Friendship M.B. Church family. The spirit of giving is alive and well at Friendship M.B. Church. A silver communion bowl was donated by Thelma Anderson. And the construction of a Family Life Center stands as a testament to the congregation’s commitment. The center houses classrooms, a kitchen, a serving area, a baptismal pool, restrooms, and a new office for the Pastor. From a brush arbor to a thriving community hub, Friendship M.B. Church embodies the enduring power of faith.
